Kuvataiteilija Rita Vargas on syntynyt Portugalissa museokaupunki Évorassa, jonka juuret ovat muotoutuneet kahdenkymmenen vuosisadan aikana. Vargas on matkustanut ja vieraillut taiteilijaresidensseissä ympäri maailmaa ja yksi taiteilijan valitsema kohde oli Suomi. Ensimmäinen lyhyt vierailu sai jatkoa vuonna 2011 Vargasin aloittaessa väitöskirjatutkimuksen, jonka tekemisen ohella hän jatkaa taiteellista työtään Jyväskylän Grafiikkakeskuksessa.

Visual Artist Rita Vargas was born in Évora, considered a museum-city, where roots are shaped by some 20 centuries of history, going as far back as Celtic times. She has been travelling and visiting Artistic Residencies around the world and Finland was one of the chosen countries. After the first short visit, the stay became more permanent with the acceptance, by the University of Jyväskylä, Faculty of Humanities (Department of Art and Culture Studies, Art History), of her Doctoral thesis in 2010. The idea of the research is related with the visual interpretation, from an Art History perspective, of the works of art created by artists-in-residence. Although this year she was finally granted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), she still works as a free-lance visual artist in Jyväskylä Centre for Printmaking.
